Sylhet Gas
Fields Ltd.
Historically, Sylhet Gas Fields Ltd. is
the pioneer of Oil & Gas exploration and production in Bangladesh (erstwhile East
Pakistan). The Company inherits from its predecessor Pakistan
Petroleum Ltd. Pakistan Petroleum Ltd. (PPL) ignited its exploration &
Drilling activities in the North-eastern area of the country (Sylhet
district) in mid fifties. It drilled the first well at Haripur in 1955 but
unfortunately the well was blown-out due to high pressure. Then between
1955-1964 PPL drilled more five welIs out of which well No. 3 & 6 could
he commissioned as producing wells. Production commenced from both the
wells in 1961 with supply of gas to Naturals Gas Fertilizer Factory at
Fenchuganj under Sylhet district. Production from well No. 3 stopped from
March I988 due to water incrustation from the well and well No. 6 is now
producing 5-6 MMCF of gas per day.
PPL also drilled another well at Chhatak under Sunamganj
district. Production commenced from that well in 1960 with supply of gas to
Chhatak Cement company. Production from that lone well at Chhatak field was
stopped in I986 due to abnormal increase of water content.
Soon after the liberation of Bangladesh, the above two
fields of the then Pakistan Petroleum Ltd., Came under the purview of
abandoned Properties Act of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and
continued its function in the name of Bangladesh Petroleum Ltd. On 8th May,
I982 the company Came under promulgation being registered under Company's
Act, 1913 in the title “Sylhet Gas Filelds Ltd.”.
