COMPANY’S OVERVIEW
BANGLADESH GAS FIELDS COMPANY LTD.
Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Ltd. (BGFCL) is
one of the largest commercial entities of the country producing natural gas
and natural gas liquid (condensate). At present the company is meeting
about 60% of natural gas demand of the country. Besides, by processing
natural gas liquid (condensate) a significant demand of liquid fuel is also
met by the company.
BGFCL derives its origin from Pakistan Shell
Oil Company, which was formed in Karachi
on 30th May, 1965. With the emergence of Bangladesh and promulgation of
Petroleum Act, 1974 Shell Oil Company sold all its shares to the Government
of Bangladesh on 9th August, 1975. The Company was renamed as Bangladesh
Gas Fields Company Ltd. on 12th September, 1975. BGFCL is a corporate body
registered under Companies Act, 1913 and a company of Bangladesh Oil, Gas
& Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla).
By an agreement dated 22nd March 1976 the
Government of Bangladesh (GOB) granted BGFCL the right to operate Titas and
Habiganj Gas Fields for 30 years. On August 10, 1985 Kamta Gas Field
discovered by Oil and Gas Development Corporation (OGDC) was placed under
BGFCL for operation. Following the Government decision of reorganization of
Petrobangla and its companies, Feni and Bakhrabad Gas Fields were
handed over to BGFCL w.e.f. 26.2.89 and 1.6.89 respectively. Further,
pursuant to a Petrobangla order, Meghna and Narsingdi Gas Fields were also
handed over to the BGFCL on 15th February 1992 which were discovered under
2nd gas development project.
Commercial production of natural gas from Titas
and Habiganj Gas Fields started in April, 1968. There were 6 wells in these
two fields, 4 at Titas and 2 at Habiganj when the Shell interests were
transferred to the GOB. In the subsequent years, a number of wells
were drilled at various gas fields under BGFCL including Titas and Habiganj
with the financial assistance of donor countries/agencies, in order to
enhance the gas production capabilities of the fields to meet the growing
demand of natural gas of the country.
At present the company has under its control 7
gas fields viz Titas, Habiganj, Bakhrabad, Feni, Meghna, Narsingdi and
Kamta with 37 wells out of which natural gas is being produced from five
fields as under.
