GSB started functioning immediately after the liberation in 1971. But it has a long history. In 1851, Geological Survey of India was established in Calcutta under the direct supervision of the British Government. In 1947, it became the Geological Survey of Pakistan and a regional office was set up in Dhaka in 1957. In 1994, this department was awarded the ‘Independence Day Award’ in the field of science and technology in recognition to its achievement towards the discovery of mineral resources in the country.

Responsibilities

Geological Survey of Bangladesh GSB) is responsible to carry on geological mapping, mineral and water resources exploration, engineering geological, urban and environmental geological programs. To achieve the goals it carries out exploration activities including detailed geophysical, geo-chemical and drilling methods are applied. GSB advises the government in all matters relating to the geology and mineral resources of the country and also serves as the national repository of all data relating to these. Besides these, researches on different disciplines of geo-sciences are conducted.

Main Functions:

    • To investigate in detail such areas as are indicated by geological mapping to be favorable for accumulation of industrial rocks, mineral fuel, ground water, and other natural resources.
    • To investigate in detail and conduct extensive geophysical, test drilling and geochemical operation in order to evaluate the known mineral deposits.
    • To conduct stratigraphic studies to identify, correlate and determine the sequence of rock units in support of mapping and exploration programmes, including age determination by fossils and other geochronological methods.
    • To conduct geological investigation in connection with construction of dams, canals, tunnels, highways, bridges, new townships and other public construction projects so as to advise the sponsoring agencies about geological feasibility of such construction projects.
    • To carry on geological and geophysical investigation, and geomorphological studies in marine and coastal areas.
