Introduction
Bangladesh
Petroleum Institute(BPI) was established by the Government of Bangladesh in
January, 1981 as a project under the Ministry of Energy and Mineral
Resources. The aim was to meet the training and research needs of
professionals and technicians of different organizations engaged in
exploration, production and distribution of oil and gas in order to
increase the technical know how, to provide technical support services and
to help growing skilled manpower. To do so it was intended that BPI
undertakes the following activities:
1. Impart
training to the professionals and technicians engaged in the
petroleum sector of the country.
2. Undertake
advanced study/research on hydrocarbon prospects and development.
3. Establish a
computerized data processing/information centre and perform subsequent
operational activities.
4. Provide
technical support services to the organizations engaged in
petroleum activities.
Beginning in
1982 the institute is continuing its effort to offer a wide range of
upstream and downstream training /research programmes for the national
petroleum industry. As a result it has developed a nation-wide reputation
for cost effective quality training courses in petroleum geology,
geophysics, petroleum engineering, data management and safety issues. This
has been achieved by its ability to offer fully flexible, industry oriented
training programmes, designed and presented by BPI's own experienced,
professional stuff and renowned professionals from Petrobangla,
Universities of Bangladesh and abroad. Consequently, the institute has been
able to respond to training requests for a wide variety of programmes from
national, multinational and independent oil companies and government
agencies.
BPI is providing
training in systematic manner to build up the capability and expertise in
different fields of Petroleum Sector for rapid and planned expansion of the
sector.
BPI now possess
the infrastructure including its own beautiful modern building at Uttara
Model Town with full furnished classroom, data processing centre, an
auditorium, a conference room, cafeteria etc., for the growth of such an
institution. Beside the above there is a Library containing 2640 nos. of
technical and scientific books, journals and training materials to
assists the resource personnel, trainee and other concerned persons to
enrich their knowledge specially in petroleum and related fields.
BPI also possess
a modern Data Processing Centre(DPC) in its premises. During 1992-94 it has
conducted seismic data processing of the data received from Petrobangla and
was able to save significant amount of foreign currency for the government.
The DPC however needs up-gradation and modernization with state-of-the-art
hardware and software to be able to provide commercial services at an
international level.
BPI is situated
at its own premises at Uttara ModeL Town
in Dhaka city. It has modern Conference
Hall, Class Rooms, Cafeteria, Library (containing 2700 books) and a fully
air-conditioned Auditorium with seating capacity of 250. BPI also has a
modern Computerized Data Processing and Management Centre meant for data
storage, processing and other related operational activities.
