Introduction:
The Bureau of Mineral Development (BMD), established in
1962, is one of the smallest Directorates under the Energy and Mineral
Resources Division of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Functions :
The main function of this Directorate is to visit and inspect
mining operations spread over whole of Bangladesh in order to check
mining activities and production statistics. Other functions relate to :
a) Maintaining records of the area bearing economic
mineral.
b) Receiving of applications for prospecting/mining leases,
examination of such applications.
c) Granting prospecting license/mining lease to the
interested parties for prospecting/ mining purposes.
d) Maintenance of records for prospecting/ mining bases
granted.
e) Inspection of progress in respect to prospecting/ mining
and observance of rules and regulations, etc., by the parties.
f) Initiating appropriate action against a party who fails
to adhere to the rules and regulations of prospecting/ mining as prescribed
by the Government.
g) Maintenance of records of mineral products in the country
and their utilization including export, if any.
h) Suggestion for framing of laws, rules and regulations in
respect of prospecting and mining minerals and also any amendment
thereof.
i) Fixation of royalty, rent, levies etc. on minerals
exploited and realization thereof.
